The Emkarate RL series of refrigeration oils was originally part of Uniqema, a company under the British ICI Group. On June 29, 2006, Croda, a UK‑based company, reached an agreement with Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) to acquire Uniqema, which is headquartered in Gouda, the Netherlands. Prior to this, Uniqema had already acquired the Icematic line of refrigeration oils from Castrol, a subsidiary of BP.

On November 1, 2007, Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE: LZ) of the United States officially announced that it had completed its acquisition of Croda’s refrigeration lubricants business, which generated approximately $84 million in revenue over the past 12 months. The acquisition encompasses Croda’s polyol ester and alkylbenzene refrigeration lubricant technologies, patents, and related intellectual property, as well as the Emkarate and Icematic brands and their customer base. The transaction does not include any manufacturing facilities. The deal was executed through the subsidiary CPI, Inc.

Emkarate RL‑series products are synthetic polyol ester (POE) refrigeration oils designed for HFC‑type, ozone‑friendly refrigerants such as R134a, R404A, R407C, R410A, R507, R23, R508A, and R508B. Available viscosities range from ISO VG 5 to VG 220.
